About the event
Shangri-La offers a limited numbers of seats to external participants needing Oregon Intervention System (OIS) certification.
Why OIS?
OIS will equip you with the knowledge to support someone to have a meaningful life, even when they act in a way that makes social and community engagement difficult. You will learn practical methods to prevent and respond to difficult situations.
Certification Levels
Shangri-La offers OIS to people supporting adults who experience an intellectual or developmental disability. Shangri-La does NOT provide training for those supporting anyone under the age of 18.
Three options for OIS certificates: (cost is the same regardless)
Basic certificate: No hands-on interventions.
General Certificate: Includes some hands-on interventions (escapes, deflections, grab releases, physical positioning, NO PPIs/Safeguarding interventions)
Crisis Certificate: Escapes, deflections, grab releases, physical positioning, Limb Control for emergency use only, Belt-Shirt and variations for emergency use only. We do not provide training to a PBSP or physical intervention above the Belt-shirt, you should reach out to the author of the PBSP or your Behavior Professional for additional training/support.
What should I expect?
At Shangri-La, OIS is trained by Shangri-La's Behavioral Support Professionals. The class is spread over the course of two, 8-hour days (9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with a 1 hour lunch break):
Day 1: Primarily consists of classroom-style learning.
Day 2: Classroom learning is wrapped-up and and attendees start the physical skills (physical interventions) portion of the training.
This workshop is a classroom-style learning environment. You'll spend most of the time learning information through lectures, activities, and discussions. A few hours are reserved for learning how to keep yourself and the people you support physically safe when a crisis occurs. This portion of class requires physical movement and your undivided attention.
NOTE: If you have an injury impacting your ability to stoop, lift, or move pain-free, please speak to your supervisor before OIS training. If you need any accommodations, including interpreting services, please note this in your registration form.
What should I wear?
The classroom temperature varies, so please dress in layers. Choose clothes that are comfortable to move in. Please make sure to wear closed-toed shoes; avoid crocs or similar (even "sport mode.")
